Frequently Asked Questions Sri Lanka Tourist Visa

Documents Required

Here is the Visa Lounge Gurgaon briefing for Sri Lanka.

1. Mandatory Document Checklist

Even with the fee waiver, certain documents are mandatory to ensure entry:

  • Passport: Original Indian passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): Although the fee is waived (Free) for Indians, you must still apply for the ETA online at eta.gov.lk.

  • Digital Arrival Card (Mandatory): You must complete the Online Arrival Card at eservices.immigration.gov.lk within 3 days (72 hours) before your arrival. Paper forms are now largely phased out.

  • Confirmed Return Ticket: Mandatory for both airline check-in and immigration.

  • Accommodation Proof: A printout of your hotel booking or a letter from your host in Sri Lanka.

  • Financial Proof: While rarely checked, you should be able to show access to roughly USD 30–50 per day in cash or via card statements.

Important Information

Important Info & Latest News

  • The “Visa-Free” Extension: The pilot project that made visas free for Indians has been officially extended through December 31, 2026. You pay ₹0 for the 30-day tourist ETA.

  • System Alert (Feb 18, 2026): Crucial Update: The official ETA website is currently experiencing technical issues. If you do not receive your approval email, you must carry your “ETA Acknowledgement/Reference Notice” (the screen you see after submitting). Immigration at Colombo will verify this and issue your visa on the spot.

  • 30-Day Limit: The free visa is valid for 30 days and allows double entry within that period. If you wish to stay longer, you must pay the standard extension fees.

  • Currency: While the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the local currency, carry some US Dollars or a Multi-currency Forex Card. Indian Rupees are not officially accepted for local transactions.

FAQ's
Can I apply for an  SriLanka visa online?

Partially. You can fill the application form online and book appointments through Visa lounge website https://visalounge.in/ .

Is the Sri Lanka visa really free for Indians in 2026?

Yes. Under the current “Visa-Free Scheme,” the standard USD 20 processing fee is waived. However, you must apply online to get the free authorization.

Can I get a Visa on Arrival if I forget the ETA?

Yes, but it is not recommended. The on-arrival counter at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) may charge a fee of approx. USD 25–40, whereas the online ETA is free.

What if I don’t receive my ETA approval email?

Due to the system issues reported this week (Feb 2026), carry a printout of your Application Acknowledgement. Immigration officers have been instructed to process entries based on the reference number.

How long does it take for the ETA to be approved?

Usually, it is instant or takes up to 24 hours. We recommend applying at least 3 days before your flight.

 Is travel insurance mandatory?

It is not a legal requirement for entry in 2026, but the Visa Lounge Gurgaon strongly suggests a policy with at least USD 25,000 coverage, as local private hospitals can be expensive for tourists.

Can I use this free visa for business meetings?

No. You must apply for a Business ETA (which may have a fee) if your primary purpose is attending meetings, conferences, or negotiations.

Is the Digital Arrival Card the same as the ETA?

No. The ETA is your entry permit (Visa), while the Arrival Card is a mandatory security and customs declaration. You need both to clear immigration.
