1. Your Travel Identity

  • Passport:

    • Original passport issued within the last 10 years.

    • Valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen area.

    • Must contain at least 2 blank visa pages.

  • Flight Ticket: Confirmed round-trip flight reservation (India to Iceland and return).

  • Accommodation Proof:

    • Tourists: Confirmed Hotel Voucher for every single night of your stay in the Schengen area.

    • Private Visit: If staying with friends/family, a formal Online Invitation Form from the Iceland Directorate of Immigration is required, along with the host’s ID/Passport copy.

  • Cover Letter & Itinerary:

    • A formal cover letter detailing your purpose of visit and travel dates.

    • A day-wise itinerary on A4 paper explaining your daily travel plans in Iceland.

  • Travel Insurance: Mandatory coverage of at least €30,000. It must cover the entire Schengen territory and include repatriation for medical reasons.

3. Financial & Professional Standing

Iceland requires proof of ISK 8,000 (approx. ₹5,200) per day if staying in a hotel:

  • Proof of Funds:

    • Personal bank statements for the last 3 to 6 months, signed and attested by a bank official.

  • Visa Lounge will book your appointment at the VFS center. Standard processing is 15 to 20 working days.

Important Information

Expert Insights by Visa Lounge

Iceland is a land of dramatic contrasts, where glaciers sit atop volcanoes and the sun doesn’t set in the summer. At Visa Lounge, we ensure you are prepared for Iceland’s unique environment and rigorous visa standards.

1. The Schengen Area (2026 Update)

Iceland is an integral part of the Schengen Area, which has now grown to 29 countries. Your Icelandic Schengen visa allows you to explore these borders without internal checks:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

2. The “Main Destination” Rule

To ensure your application is processed by the correct embassy (Iceland is represented by the Danish Embassy in India):

  • Maximum Nights: Iceland must be where you spend the most nights of your trip.

  • Equal Stay: If your time is split equally (e.g., 5 nights in Iceland and 5 nights in Norway), you must apply through Iceland if it is your first stop in Europe.

3. Timing Your Trip (2026 “Sweet Spots”)

  • Northern Lights (September – March): 2026 is a fantastic year for the Aurora Borealis due to high solar activity. January and February offer the longest nights, while March provides a great balance of daylight and dark skies.

  • Midnight Sun (June – July): Experience 24 hours of daylight. It’s the best time for hiking and visiting the remote Westfjords, though seeing the Northern Lights is impossible during these months.

  • Solar Eclipse 2026: Mark your calendar for August 12, 2026. Iceland will be one of the best places on Earth to witness a Total Solar Eclipse.

4. Cultural “Pro-Tips” & Etiquette

  • The “Shower Naked” Rule: This is a non-negotiable hygiene rule in Iceland. Before entering any geothermal pool (like the Blue Lagoon), you must shower completely naked in the communal or private booths provided.

  • Respect the Moss: Icelandic moss is incredibly fragile and can take 100 years to grow back if stepped on. Always stay on marked paths.

  • Cashless Society: Iceland is one of the most cashless countries in the world. You can pay for everything—from a hot dog to a public toilet—using a card or phone (Apple/Google Pay). You likely won’t need a single physical Króna (ISK).

  • Pure Water: Don’t buy bottled water. Icelandic tap water is some of the purest in the world. Bring a reusable bottle and fill it up anywhere for free!

5. Essential Safety & Logistics

  • Driving Rules: Headlights must be on at all times, day or night. Off-road driving is strictly illegal and carries massive fines to protect the volcanic soil.

  • Weather Awareness: The weather can change in five minutes. We recommend downloading the SafeTravel app to receive real-time alerts on road conditions and wind speeds.

  • The 90/180 Rule: You can stay for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day window. If you stay for 90 days starting January 1st, you must leave by March 30th and cannot return until the rolling 180-day window allows.

FAQ's

Expert Advice from the Visa Lounge Team

Can I handle my Iceland visa application online?

Mostly! You can kickstart the entire process—filling out your forms and booking your VFS appointment—right here through visalounge.in. Since Iceland is part of the Schengen zone, you’ll still need to make a quick, one-time visit to the visa center to drop off your physical documents and give your biometrics (fingerprints).

Do Indians really need a visa for Iceland?

Yes. If you’re traveling on an Indian passport, you’ll need a Schengen Visa (Type C) before you board your flight. Iceland doesn’t offer visa-on-arrival, so getting this stamped in advance is essential. It’s your ticket to exploring the “Land of Fire and Ice” for up to 90 days.

How much does the Iceland visa cost? As of February 2026, the standard fees are:

  • Adults: €90 (approx. ₹9,890)

  • Children (6–12 years): €45 (approx. ₹4,940)

  • Children under 6: Free of charge

  • Note: There is also a VFS service charge (approx. ₹2,900) and optional add-ons like premium lounge or courier services.

I’ve heard Iceland is “easier” to get a visa for. Is that true?

Actually, yes! Iceland currently holds one of the lowest rejection rates in the Schengen Area. Recent 2025/2026 data shows an approval rate as high as 91-94%. Because Iceland receives fewer applications than “giants” like France or Italy, the consulate can often process files more efficiently, making it a fantastic choice for first-time Schengen applicants.

How exactly does the “90/180 Rule” work? Think of it as a rolling 180-day window. On any day you are in Iceland (or any Schengen country), look back exactly 180 days. In that “window,” your total stay cannot exceed 90 days.

  • It doesn’t reset: Leaving and coming back doesn’t “reset” the clock to zero.

  • The Math: If you stay 90 days in a row starting January 1st, you must leave by March 30th and can’t return until July (when the days from January start “falling out” of the 180-day window).

What’s the difference between Single-Entry and Multiple-Entry?

  • Single-Entry: Perfect for a one-time bucket-list trip. Once you fly back to India, the visa is finished, even if you still have “days” left.

  • Multiple-Entry: This is great if you plan to visit a non-Schengen neighbor (like London) and then come back to Iceland, or if you plan to return to Europe later in the year.

How much money should I show in my bank account?

Iceland is very specific about “subsistence.” You generally need to show proof of:

  • ISK 8,000 per day (approx. ₹5,200) if you are staying in a hotel.

  • ISK 4,000 per day (approx. ₹2,600) if you are staying with a host who is providing meals. At Visa Lounge, we recommend showing a stable balance of ₹2.5 Lakh to ₹3 Lakhs for a two-week trip to ensure your application is seen as financially “solid.”
